Nine scholars received special Hillman Advancing Early Research Opportunities (AERO) grants this fall, awarding them each $5,000 to fund their work. The goal of the Hillman AERO small grant is to support scholar research that represents a significant step in building a trajectory of work that leads to the publication or development of an innovation. Sydney updated the program office as follows.
Sydney Axson, BSN, RN is a third year PhD candidate at University of Pennsylvania and applied her funds to a research project in which she led a team to analyze prescribing patterns of opioids to adolescents (age 10-19, as defined by the World Health Organization) by looking at a cross-section of data in the electronic medical record at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, one of the largest pediatric health systems in the country.
“This work contributes to understanding how an adolescent population is exposed to opioids through the healthcare system,” reads the abstract. “Characterizing opioids prescribed upon discharge is one step towards a better understanding of how opioids enter communities and impact public health.” Their findings were published in The Journal of Child & Adolescent Substance Abuse at the end of October, available here.
This research is directly in line with her dissertation which explores patient and clinical factors associated with opioid prescribing in adolescents. Additional authors on the paper include Hillman Scholar alum Nicholas Giordano, and Penn Nursing faculty Catherine McDonald and Jennifer Pinto-Martin.
