Hillman scholar Dr. Laura Sinko defended her dissertation, “Finding the Strength to Heal: A Campus Story,” in May 2019 at The University of Michigan School of Nursing. Her research focused on healing after unwanted sexual experiences on a college campus, utilizing data from the US, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, and Italy. The final product was a thoughtful and engaging presentation featuring photography and narrative story-telling – a deep exploration of the influence of culture on the trauma recovery process in survivors of gender-based violence.
Dr. Sinko took further steps to spread her research and help connect communities of survivors, utilizing filmmaking and the internet – a video she produced was screened at the end of her presentation. Furthering her reach, The University of Michigan Matthei Botanical Gardens exhibited Dr. Sinko’s interactive photography exhibit in April, which was also covered on FOX2 News Detroit.
Dr. Laura Sinko is a certified clinical trauma specialist who works clinically on the University of Michigan Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit. She is a Member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and the International Nurses Society on Addictions. More about her work can be read here.
